Timeline:

1000 B.C - A.D 500: Yemen provided the route - the "frankincense trail" for goods from the east and south that were prized by the civilizations to the north.

A.D 632: Yemen became one of the first countries to introduce Islam.

A.D 897: Zaydi kingdom was establishes in North Yemen, making northern highlands the home of the Zaydi sect of Shi ah Islam.

1517: Ottoman Empire, centered in what is now Turkey, took over Yemen

1849: Ottoman Turks returned to Yemen, and a separate North Yemen emerged at the end of World War I (1914 -1918)

1948-1955: After attempt to overthrow the kingdom, a military coup succeeded in 1962, forming Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) - Civil war erupted.

1970: Struggle ended

1974: A military government replaced the civilian one.

1972-1979: The separate Yemen's (North-South) ended border wars by agreeing to unite. - Agreements soon ignored.

Late 1980's: Agreed to again unite

May 1990: YAR (North) and PDRY (South) combined to create the Republic of Yemen (ROY).

SUMMARY:
Yemen has retained its diverse traditions by preserving it's country through their religion and customs. Through out the years of the development of this country the political aspect has changed from what was close to a dictatorship to a republic government. Culturally Yemen has advanced to more modern clothing with many colors and styles. Between modern and tradition it has clashed by clothing changing and a new custom of men and women chewing a leaf called qat which brings them a feeling of well being and allows them to socialize. In A.D 632 Yemen became one of the first counties to introduce Islam which was an important cause and opened up the Yemen world to Islamic practices.
